Motorists in Düsseldorf will face major detours starting October 15, 2025, as the A59 motorway towards Leverkusenwill be completely closed for eight months. The reason: a full structural renewal of the concrete road surface, which has reached a critical level of wear.
The closure affects the section between Benrath and Garath, used daily by thousands of commuters and trucks. Completion is expected by June 2026.
According to the NRW Ministry of Transport, cracks and cavities under the concrete slabs pose a growing safety risk. Temporary repairs are no longer possible.
Traffic will be diverted via the A3 and A46, though authorities warn of heavy congestion. Additional regional and S-Bahn trains will be added to ease the pressure on commuters.
The project will also include new noise barriers and drainage systems to reduce environmental impact.
“This will cause inconvenience, but it’s an investment in safety and reliability,” said a spokesperson for Autobahn GmbH West.
