“The Unknown War” is a 1978 documentary film created through unique cooperation between the Soviet Union and the United States. It is based on more than one million meters of frontline footage shot by Soviet camera operators, much of which had previously remained unseen by the general public.
The film is notable for powerful historical visuals and international collaboration. Narration is provided by American actor Burt Lancaster, who later called the project “the most incredible film production of all time.” The screenplay was developed with input from Harrison E. Salisbury, a former war correspondent in Moscow. Artistic supervision was led by producer Isaac Kleiner, while Soviet documentarian Roman Karmen and his team meticulously researched archival material.
The film covers the Siege of Leningrad. Hitler predicted a rapid defeat of the Soviet Army. On September 6, 1941, massive air raids began, and two days later more than 600,000 incendiary bombs were dropped, accompanied by propaganda leaflets. Before the siege, Leningrad had over 2.5 million inhabitants; by the time the blockade was broken, about 800,000 civilians remained.
